Here's my answer:

I think when you're starting out you should just focus on building one list, monetizing that list, and doing a really, really kick-butt job of that because when you start dividing your efforts, what ends up happening is that your profits get divided, too.

Let's talk about a perfect world. If you have one squeeze page and one sales letter and your job is to drive traffic there, you don't want to be going into all sorts of niches. What you want to be doing is figuring out how you can drive as much traffic as humanly possible through that one system that you're totally excited about, you're totally passionate about and you're testing like crazy to ramp up the conversion through the roof. And at the same time, you're building a list around that theme.

Now, might you have a dud? You might have a dud, and you know, if you're ripping on that for a month and a half and you're not able to make any money at all, maybe you should look at one other niche, maybe. But I don't believe there is such a thing as a niche that can't be effectively monetized.

I think that some take a little bit more effort than others. But I personally can't work on a project that doesn't play to my interest and play to my passions, play to the things that I really care about. I can't do it. Some people can; I'm not one of them.

So my advice is to focus on one niche and just get dedicated to it. Find a way to build a list in that niche and to monetize it effectively so you can build a business around it that you can be really proud of and you can hold onto for a long time. At one time or another, each of us has been approached by someone promoting an MLM product or business opportunity. Some familiar MLM companies are: Mary Kay, Amway, NSA, Herbalife and Nu Skin. For those involved with MLM, there are primarily two ways to make money: sell product or sign-up someone to sell product as part of your organization (often referred to as a downline) - the latter often being the more profitable.

Frequently MLM promoters focus on the wrong personalities when recruiting individuals to be part of their downline. In fact, it is estimated that only about one in ten people recruited succeed at making a full-time living with MLM. To help explain this poor success ratio, let’s consider the Options - Procedures meta program from NLP.

In NLP, meta programs are filters that operate at an unconscious level and determine how you perceive the world around you. They have a major influence on how you communicate with others and the behaviors you manifest. For this article, we will focus on the Options - Procedures meta program. This meta program is based on the question: Does the person prefer to keep their options open and explore alternatives or feel most comfortable following established procedures?

The terms Options and Procedures describe two ends of a spectrum. On one end, we have Options people who are motivated by the possibility of doing something in an alternative way. They are the type of people who will develop procedures, yet not follow them. They enjoy breaking or bending the rules. Exploring new ideas and possibilities is of great interest. They may begin a new project and not feel compelled to finish it. It is often said of these people that if someone gave them a guaranteed way to make a million dollars, the first thing they would do is look at ways to improve the process. These people are motivated when they hear words or phrases such as: alternatives, break the rules, choice, flexibility, unlimited possibilities, the sky's the limit, expand your choices, let's look at other options. These people do well in situations that require developing solutions or alternatives to current systems - fashion designing, process re-engineering.

On the other end of the spectrum, we have Procedures people who like to follow established rules and processes. Once they understand a procedure, they will follow it repeatedly. They have great difficulty developing new processes and feel lost without a clearly defined procedure. They are more concerned about how to do something than about why they should do it. For them, bending or breaking rules is sacrilege! They are motivated by words and phrases such as: correct way, tried and true, first … then … lastly, clearly defined path, proven methodology. Procedures people do well in a structured environment with clearly defined processes, for example bookkeeping or commercial airline piloting.

In a general work context, about forty percent of the people have a preference for Options, forty percent for Procedures and twenty percent are fairly evenly balanced between the two.

Now, let's return to looking at MLM. Of the two types of people, which one will most likely be successful as an MLM distributor? I suggest that MLM organizations have been successful because they have developed proven, successful ways to sell their products and to build an extensive and profitable downline. In other words, their ideal candidate is someone who follows a proven set of procedures - a Procedures person!

Yet, when I am approached by an MLM distributor or attend an MLM recruiting meeting, I repeatedly hear words such as: the sky’s the limit, gives you freedom, you are your own boss, flexibility, explore the possibilities, keep your options open, … . That is, they are speaking to and attracting Options people. Options people are attracted by the freedom and flexibility of the opportunity and readily sign-up. The first time they market the product or business opportunity, they may follow the proven process, the next time, they will probably do it a different way and different yet again the time following that. At some point, they may develop a brilliant way to develop their business. However, they don’t take time to fully develop the procedures before moving on to something new. Thus, they do not achieve the full potential of the opportunity.

On a related note, it has been discovered that telemarketers with a preference for the Procedures pattern sell about three times as much as Options people. Simply because sales (and MLM) is a very structured process.

So if you’re feeling that way about your approach to your mlm leads then chances are you’re not using a consultative approach. What’s the difference? Well basically a consultative approach encompasses the idea of focusing on the prospect and the prospect’s wants and then working together to find out if what you have to offer is a fit for the prospect. When approaching the prospect, ask questions geared toward finding out what your prospect wants. What are their goals? How did they arrive at these goals? Who supports them in their decisions and actions? Ask about how they’d like to see themselves 90-days, 6 months, and a year down the road. After this, help the prospect to search for options as to how they can attain those goals. Obviously the prospect understands that your end goal is to recruit them or make the sale if there’s a fit. Don’t try to hide that you are looking for a win-win here. However, don’t cheat the prospect out of searching for feasible solutions that do and do not include you. As these options become apparent, you can work with the prospect to share how what you have to offer can truly be a fit for the prospect if you feel that is the case.

You want to hone in on you and your mlm company as a feasible alternative by sharing with the prospect what differentiates you and your company from other opportunities out there. Your prospect is interested in how your MLM or Network Marketing Company can help the prospect. You have to be specific as to how you are different and how that difference is relevant to your prospect as an individual based on the information you gathered in the beginning of this process. When you do this you build a relationship that 97% of network marketers out there today are not bothering to do. In essence, this creates a sustainable competitive advantage for you. Think again from the standpoint of your prospect, what would I do if someone contacted me in this way? What if someone contacted me (given that I am actually looking into an MLM or Network Marketing Company) and took the time to understand me in this way and then relate that understanding to how their opportunity could help me as an individual? Right, that’s a big difference from the initial feeling most people have about how they’re currently approaching their leads or prospects.

All of this works under a few assumptions.

Tip 1- Have a way of contacting prospects who want to be contacted. A great system for filtering through to the right people is to have a system like Power Filter Page in effect. Essentially, when you sit down to work in your business you are contacting those that actually want to hear from you. This should also take the horrible feeling of cold calling out from the pit of your stomach as well. MLM or Network Marketing isn’t magic and it does require work, however you can choose to work smart with a lead filtering system.

Tip 2- Qualify your prospects. Before taking the time to develop the relationship be sure that the prospect does in fact have the time, money, and desire to work with you. If not, you’ll both get frustrated and results will suffer. When initially contacting the prospect, be sure to ask questions relating to this.

Tip 3- Posture yourself as a professional. When you don’t sound desperate that definitely separates you from the majority of multi-level marketers out there. Avoid creating the impression that anyone can just join your business at anytime. Be selective and let the prospect know that your time, money, and effort will be invested in those who qualify and join your team. Make your prospect want that opportunity because if they’re properly qualified, you should in fact be spending that time with the new distributor.

As an MLM or Network Marketing Distributor it’s your responsibility to recruit into your business because that leads to long term profitability and leverage. This process doesn’t have to be the most painful thing out there. Speaking with prospects who have requested information from you specifically is a great foundational building block for you and your organization to implement immediately. With a prospecting filter in place, the relationship building strategies referenced become much easier.
